Doncaster Rovers report back for training: Hit your targets or else, warns Paul Dickov

Woe betide any members of the Doncaster Rovers squad that might have overindulged during their summer break.

Because they will be in for a very nasty shock - and potential fine - should they report back for pre-season training today out of shape.

Rovers’ senior squad face a week of rigorous testing and fitness work upon their return to Cantley Park as boss Paul Dickov bids to lay the foundations for the new season, which kicks off in a little under six weeks’ time.

And the Scot is promising to get tough from day one on anyone not meeting their individual targets.

“The boys all had fitness programmes to follow and we’ll find out [today] on the first day of pre-season whether they have followed them or not,” Dickov told the Star.

“They have had target weights and target body fats.

“If anyone comes in below that they’ll be getting fined severely because we need to hit the ground running.

“We want a bright, vibrant, energetic team this season,” he added.

“I’m confident with the ones we’ve got already and the ones we’re still looking to recruit that we’ll get that.

“But the fitness work that we’ll do over the next few weeks is absolutely vital in laying that foundation.

“I want us to be faster, fitter and stronger this time around.”

Rovers begin their pre-season fixtures next Wednesday when they make the short journey to Westfield Lane to play Frickley Athletic of the Evo-Stik League Northern Premier Division.

The squad will then be put through their paces at a fitness camp in Portugal before starting a run of four home friendlies with the visit of Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, July 21.
