Paul Dickov has backed Marko Marosi to take his big chance between the sticks for Rovers in the FA Cup tonight.
Marosi will start for Rovers at Bristol City this evening after Sam Johnstone was recalled by Manchester City and subsequently joined Preston on loan.
Football Association regulations prevent Rovers from bringing in another goalkeeper for the third round replay, ensuring the Slovakia U21 international will make his full debut.
“He can handle the pressure,” Dickov said.
“He’s a good young keeper, he’s improved since we brought him in.
“Me and Paul Gerrard were speaking about it yesterday, when you’re a kid you want to get your chance and you’re going to get your chance sometime, and when it comes you’ve got to take it.
“I have every confidence in the kid.
“He’s done very well for the development squad, he’s doing really well in training and he’ll be buzzing.
“He’s got a great mentality - a stupid mentality what you expect of a keeper.
“But he’s grounded, he’s very calm and we’ve got a lot of faith in him.”
Dickov admitted he was surprised to see Johnstone recalled after being given the impression the England U21 international would be staying at the Keepmoat until the end of the season.
Johnstone has joined Preston on loan until the end of the season with a view to a permanent deal involving a ‘seven figure sum’ according to Dickov.
He said: “We knew it could happen but we didn’t expect it to happen.
“We didn’t expect another club in our league to be able to pay that sort of money.
“The signs that we had were that he was going to stay until the end of the season. “That’s why we were quite comfortable with signing the short term deal initially. This move to Preston has come up.”
