The versatile Northern Ireland international yesterday committed his future to the club until the summer of 2019, extending his contract by two years.

And, despite being only 22, he believes he can be seen as one of the senior figures at the club.

“I do feel like I’m one of the mature ones maybe – I certainly look mature!” McCullough told the official Rovers website. “I definitely think I’m more senior now than when I came and I can help the younger players too.

“To be fair the new signings have all settled in really quickly.

“I came back a bit later and the new lads had already settled in so there was no problem there.

“The manager has obviously put his trust in me and wants to keep me here for another few seasons.”

McCullough joined up with the Rovers squad for pre-season training after Euro 2016 with Northern Ireland.

He impressed last term after being deployed in a deep-lying midfield role, switching from defence.

And the former Manchester United trainee says he has noticed plenty of personal improvement since his arrival at Rovers three years ago.

He said: “I think I’ve improved massively.

“Obviously I was quite young when I first came and I was still learning the game but I’ve improved heaps and bounds and I really want to influence the team more, rather than just concentrating on myself which is what I did when I first came.

“We’ve got a few utility players who can play in a lot of positions and help the team and it will work in my favour.”
