Doncaster Rovers: Harry Toffolo injury gives Darren Ferguson selection dilemma

Mathieu Baudry has made 11 appearances this season and finished on the losing side just twice.

His influence on the team last season was as clear as day.

So it seems strange, at a time when Rovers are still searching for a consistent winning formula, that the French centre back is sat on the bench.

Three into two obviously does not go and in-form Andy Butler and Joe Wright must play.

The recent dabble with 3-4-3 gave Rovers more defensive backbone but it also seemed to isolate John Marquis and reduce their potency in the final third.

Hence the return to a 4-4-2 diamond, a switch that has got the creative juices flowing again and seemingly given Marquis a new lease of life - but one which has left Baudry out in the cold since he got the hook at Wigan.

How much longer, though, can Darren Ferguson afford to keep one of his best players on the bench?

If you are selecting Rovers’ best 11 ‘footballers’ then Baudry gets in every time. In fact, he would probably make the five-a-side team.

Young left back Tyler Garratt has shown some improvement this season but, especially given the injury-hit resources currently available, there is an argument to get your best, most experienced 11 players on the pitch and go from there.

A 5-3-2 might be the best compromise following the injury to Harry Toffolo, with Tommy Rowe, Niall Mason or Matty Blair assuming wing back duties.

Baudry might not be 100 per cent comfortable playing as the left-sided centre back, something he recently alluded to in this paper, but sometimes needs must.

There could even be a case to use him at full back or as a defensive midfielder.

Unlikely maybe. But an even bigger call is leaving him out completely.
