Doncaster Rovers: Ferguson's men ready to get physical

And while his recruitment has also clearly indicated his ambition for Rovers to play their way out of League Two, he says Rovers will have to be wise enough to adapt to their new surroundings if they are to be successful.

Big centre-backs Mathieu Baudry and Joe Wright bring some much-needed extra height at the back, while John Marquis is a striker famed for his physicality and ability to hold the ball up and bring others into play.

Giving Rovers a bit more of a physical edge has clearly been at the forefront of Ferguson’s planning.

“I’ve got to be aware that it won’t be easy to play the way we want to play every week,” he told The Star.

“I think now we’ve got a strong enough team physically [to match other teams in that department].

“I think if you look at what we’ve brought in, Joe Wright’s a good size, Mathieu Baudry’s a good size. They both know the league well and have handled the league well.

“The clips I’ve watched of Mathieu, he coped with the bigger strikers in this league very well. As did Wright.”

“I think we needed to look at the fact physically we needed to have enough,” he added.

“We’ll be fine at home on our pitch, in terms of us playing the way we want to. It’s probably going to be the best in the league.

“But when you get to December time the pitches will turn and you will have to have a different way.

“It’s not so much a different way of playing but you just have to be sensible enough to play the right way to get a result.

“I’ve been here for a while so people know how I want to play. But I think you have to be wise enough to make sure you get out of the league regardless of how you do it.”
