His first 15 games in charge produced nine wins.

His next 16 have produced precisely none.

The Scot was asked at his pre-match press conference on Thursday whether he can quite get his head round that record - and his response was a lengthy one.

“It is [extraordinary] and I bet you guys [the media] have probably never seen a situation like it,” said Rovers’ boss.

“And it could be 16 different reasons. There could be a reason in every game why you haven’t won it.

“It’s hard to put your finger on it. But I do believe, and I think everyone has seen, that we have not dealt with the situation, in the sense of losing that belief and confidence, well enough as a group. That’s really caused us a problem.

“But I’ve still seen enough, especially last week. We’re not giving up on it. We’ve got to make sure that we win the game on Saturday and see where that takes us. And then you go onto the next one, that’s the only way we look at it.

“Until someone tells us we’re mathematically out of it, we have to keep fighting.

“And I also think it’s important, regardless of what happens, that we show that fight and determination going into next season anyway because you do get a response from the people that really matter, the supporters, and they gave you that response at the end of the game against Rochdale.

“We’re third bottom, we haven’t won in so many games but yet they were still applauding the players which I think is an important factor.

“But going back to how do you put your finger on why we haven’t won in so many games, I think that’s down to a combination of things.”
