The January window saw Rob Jones and Richie Wellens - the two oldest players in the squad - move on.

Ferguson cited Wellens’ commuting issues and Jones’ fitness problems as the main reasons for their departure.

But Ferguson has since confirmed that the age of the squad is something that is on his mind.

“I think the average age of the squad is about 27, 28,” he said.

“I would like that to be younger - but it’s important we get the balance right.

“I think you’ve got to get a good crop of young players, with energy, who understand the way I want to play.

“I think you’ve seen that in the period I’ve been here and I think you can understand where I want to go with it. I think it’s obvious.

“But added to that you need good senior pros in the dressing room which I think we have got.”
