Doncaster Rovers: Ferguson to keep close tabs on Jordan Houghton's injury recovery at Chelsea

Darren Ferguson says he will keep tabs on injury victim Jordan Houghton in the hope of bringing him back to Doncaster Rovers in the future.

Houghton was yesterday ruled out for the rest of the season at least after suffering knee ligament damage in the draw with Luton Town at the weekend.

He has returned to parent club Chelsea for a full diagnosis but is expected to miss much of the rest of 2017.

Ferguson has previously admitted his interest in securing another loan for Houghton should Rovers win promotion to League One this term.

And he says he will follow his recovery with interest over the next few months.

“There’s no question in my mind that Jordan is going to have a good career in the game,” Ferguson told The Star. “We’d have been delighted to get him back if we manage to go up.

“The next stage of his development would be to go to a League One club.

“But certainly, depending on what the outcome of the injury is, he probably won’t be playing for a long while now.

“It’s definitely a ligament injury but which one and how bad, Chelsea will determine that.

“But it’s not good, let’s put it that way.”

As Rovers prepare for life without Houghton, Ferguson is confident he has enough options at his disposal to cover the midfielder’s departure.

He said: “We’ve got Harry Middleton, Paul Keegan, Mathieu Baudry and Niall Mason who could all go in there.

“Conor Grant could play there in a one or two but it probably wouldn’t be ideal for him.

“I’ve got enough options, put it that way.

“I’ve got an idea of what I’d like to do but it depends on the system we play.”
