Doncaster Rovers: Darren Ferguson praises '˜low maintenance' loanee Niall Mason
He might have inadvertently put through his own net in the defeat to Carlisle United.
But that won’t have changed Darren Ferguson’s glowing assessment of on-loan Aston Villa youngster Niall Mason.
Since suffering an early season injury setback, the 20-year-old has become a regular fixture in the Rovers starting line-up.
His versatility has certainly been evident over the last week as he switched seamlessly from defence into midfield at Newport and then back again at Brunton Park.
And his overall contribution this season has not gone unnoticed by Ferguson.
“Mason’s been fantastic,” said Ferguson this week.
“He’s played in all different positions and he’s low maintenance.
“I can’t have any complaints about Niall and in fact he’s probably more or less one of the first names on the teamsheet at the moment.
“He’s been so consistent in every position he has played, he’s done very well the boy.”
Andy Butler said Mason was “missing a tooth nearly” in the immediate aftermath of Friday’s physical battle at Newport.
Ferguson joked: “He’s too handsome anyway!
“I knew he was covered in blood, I didn’t know he’d lost a tooth.
“He’ll be okay, he’s a tough boy.”
Ferguson has confirmed he would like to see Mason back at Rovers next season - either on a permanent or temporary basis.
