Doncaster Rovers: Darren Ferguson goes on stat attack ahead of Luton Town clash
Darren Ferguson has given his players the perfect pick-me-up following their first defeat since December - a stat-attack!
A team meeting, held yesterday at the club’s Cantley Park training ground, marked the two-thirds point of the season and followed a similar discussion earlier in the campaign.
And the number crunching session is bound to have lifted spirits after a frustrating night at Carlisle on Tuesday - and ahead of another big game at home to fourth-placed Luton Town tomorrow.
“We’ve been through the stats with the players, as we did after the first third of the season, in a meeting this morning,” said Ferguson at yesterday’s pre-match press conference.
“Obviously we’re top of the league, we’ve scored the most goals, had the most shots, we’re third in the league from the last ten games and we’ve got the best home record.
“But the biggest thing is we’re top of the league with 15 games to go. We’re in a great position.
“Up to now we should be pleased and delighted where we are,” he continued.
“If we continue that we’ve obviously got one hell of a chance.
“We’ve been very good, very consistent and just have to go again.
“I think it’s important to have a bit of a breather, have a look at these things and think ‘right, we’re in a really good position here’.
“We’ve got a lot of confidence at the moment. I’ve been delighted with the players and the players know that.
“They’ve just got to dust themselves down from the other night and if we can have another run like we went on after the defeat at Plymouth, well the games are running out then.”
Ferguson has been handed a defensive fitness boost ahead of tomorrow’s game against a Luton side who are currently 11 points adrift of Doncaster.
Mathieu Baudry returned to training yesterday and pending no reaction should be fit to return to the side.
Fellow centre half Andy Butler is also available after recovering from a sickness bug.
Meanwhile, Ferguson said that forward Gary McSheffrey is fit again but not yet ready to start a game.
