Doncaster Rovers: Curtis Main can be our ‘20-goal a season’ man, says Dickov

Curtis Main must get inside the box more if he is going to improve his goalscoring record.

That is the verdict of Rovers boss Paul Dickov who says Main can become a 20-goal striker for the club.

The 22-year-old has netted ten times since his summer move from Middlesbrough, though his campaign was blighted by an injury.

“The reason that we signed him was that we were confident he’d be that 20-goal a season striker for us,” Dickov said. “And we’re still confident about that.

“We watched him a lot last season when he was causing problems for defences in the Championship.

“Before he came here he was known more as a scorer of great goals than a great goalscorer. We’ve seen some of that here because he’s scored some wonderful goals.

“We’re drumming it into him that he can be the 15-20 goals striker as well as scoring some brilliant goals from outside the box like he has done.

“How he does that is by getting in the box more or making runs off the shoulder rather than coming deep for the ball. He’s been doing that more recently and that’s why he’s scored a few more goals.

“His finishing in training is phenomenal at times and we need to get him into the positions to do that.

“The other players need to realise that about Curtis as well.”

Main has hit form over the past couple of months to emerge as one of Rovers’ most important players.

Dickov believes that would have happened much sooner had the forward not suffered a knee injury early in the season.

He said: “Curtis hit the ground running with us but got that injury and needed an op.

“He came back and had a couple of niggles which is always likely when you’ve been out for a while.

“When he came back the team was doing well so he had a battle on trying to force his way in.

“But he’s kept patient, he’s really taken his chance and now he is starting to become the player we knew we had signed.”
