The ambition of Doncaster Rovers was the main draw for striker John Marquis, who has joined on a two-year deal.

The 24-year-old joins on a free transfer from Millwall and is fresh from helping Northampton Town to the League Two title during a three month loan spell at the end of last season.

Marquis netted six goals in 15 appearances for the Cobblers, to help them over the line in their quest for promotion.

After being part of a promotion-winning side last season, Marquis is keen to repeat the feat and feels Rovers have the right ambition to make it happen.

"A few weeks ago I met with the manager, we had a chat about what he feels I can bring to the club and now it's all come around and I'm happy to be here," he told The Star and the Free Press.

"The ambition of the club to get back promotion was big for me.

"It's got everything, the stadium, the facilities and where it's been as a club.

"The ambition is to get promoted, to improve and that's really a big factor for me."

The Londoner joined Millwall as a trainee and made his professional debut in 2009. He went on to make 65 appearances for Millwall - mainly as a substitute - scoring six goals.

Marquis had loan spells with Portsmouth, Torquay United, Cheltenham, Gillingham and Leyton Orient but his most productive came in his most recent switch to Northampton.

He was brought to Sixfields by then Northampton boss Chris Wilder after 18-goal striker Marc Richards suffered an Achilles injury.

Marquis is Rovers' seventh signing of the summer, following Gary McSheffrey, Tommy Rowe, Mathieu Baudry, Joe Wright, Ross Etheridge and Matty Blair.
