Doncaster marks Dementia Awareness Week
An afternoon tea was held at at The Walled Garden at St Catherine’s House in Balby, which is run by Flourish Enterprises, and was attended by people with dementia, carers, health professionals and supporters.
Tea, coffee, scones and cakes were on offer to visitors, who could also take a look around the recently opened Dementia Garden – which is a multi-sensory garden designed and built specially for people with dementia and their carers.

Hide AdThe garden was funded by a range of partners who support the Doncaster Dementia Strategic Partnership.
Making a guest appearance was Eileen Harrington, founder of the charity DonMentia, and a Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH) Governor.
Just days previous to this event, Eileen was named a winner in the Doncaster Dementia Awards 2016, where she was rewarded for the best individual contribution to supporting people with the condition and promoting awareness of it.
Eileen said: “We had a lovely afternoon at The Walled Garden – with delightful company and pleasant weather.

Hide Ad“In fact we’ve had an excellent week raising awareness of dementia.
“When I won the award, I was over the moon and very emotional.”
Wayne Goddard, who is the joint lead for dementia in Doncaster, who works for the CCG and Doncaster Council, said: “We’ve had a fantastic week marking dementia awareness in Doncaster and I want to congratulate Eileen on her award success.
“She is so dedicated to supporting people with dementia, she really, truly deserves this award.”
The event was hosted by Flourish Enterprises, which is a social enterprise which provides work and vocational opportunities to people who need support to get back into education or employment.
