A Doncaster resident is in the final stages of preparation for the Virgin London Marathon which takes place on Sunday April, 13.

Colin Wallace, 38, is an Area Veterinary Manager for pet charity PDSA - overseeing seven pet hospitals in Yorkshire and the East Midlands, which provide over 330,000 free treatments to the sick and injured pets of local people in need ever year.

Colin has spent the past year training for the gruelling 26.2 mile race, and is now hoping that local animal lovers will dig deep to help him reach his £2,000 fundraising target.

“After months of training the big day is almost here,” said Colin.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing the sights of London by foot! I’m running three times in the week, with a longer run on Sundays. I’ve never ran a marathon before, and I know on the day it’s going to be a struggle to get to the finish line. But I’m hoping the knowledge that I’m running for a great cause and the support of all my friends and family will help me make it to the finish line.”

Colin is aiming to complete the run in under six hours. His determination to complete the gruelling course has been spurred on by the struggles PDSA is currently facing.

“Since the start of the credit crunch and subsequent recession, there has been a 50 per cent rise in the number of pets PDSA treats. Pet owners who were more than capable of caring for their pets needs have suddenly found themselves in position where they’re unable to afford veterinary bills and desperately need our help. Working for PDSA I’ve seen the relief on their faces, knowing their animals won’t be a silent victim of the recession.”

Colin is aiming to raises at least £2,000 with his marathon mission, and is planning a number of fundraising events in the coming months. Anyone wishing to donate can also do so online at or by texting PET to 82727 to donate £5*.

Sarah Shelton, PDSA Community Events Fundraiser, said: “We’re delighted Colin is running the marathon for PDSA. His support will mean many pets receive the vital veterinary treatment they need. We’ll be cheering him and the rest of Team PDSA on along the course and I hope local animal lovers will dig deep to support him too.”
