The Welshman has made it clear to his charges that their collective performance in Sunday’s 38-19 B&I Cup quarter-final against Cornish Pirates wasn’t good enough.

“There were a lot of changes but it didn’t affect us in the other B&I Cup games,” he said.

“We were a bit down on juice against Jersey but it was still close. Sunday’s game was a spanking and it wasn’t acceptable.

“We’ve not got a game this weekend so we’ll have had two weeks to prepare to face Bristol and if we dish out the same it’s going to be an embarrassing day in front of the Sky cameras.

“We can’t brush the display under the carpet and we’ve got to look at ourselves, particularly individually, because some of the boys weren’t at the races.

“We need to find out why because it was a great opportunity for some of them – particularly the whole front-row – and lads such as second-rower Tyler Hotson, who has been a bit frustrated over the last few weeks, and scrum-half Brad Field who has been kicking his heels for a couple of weeks.

“Some of them did okay but others were well below the standards that’s expected of them and they’ve needed to be reminded of that this week.

“They need to raise their game and quickly.

“We need to get back on track for what is going to be a fantastic run-in with four big games coming up and there may be another four after that.”
