A pair of ambitious swimming coaches from Doncaster have embarked on a gruelling training regime in a bid to both swim the English Channel.
Leon Fryer and Alistair Beattie, run the open water swimming company ‘Swim Your Swim Ltd’ and provide open water coaching classes at the Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust (DCLT) operated Hatfield Outdoor Activity Centre.
Leon has already completed his challenge of two relay crossings in one month swimming the Channel as part of a team of open water swimmers and Alistair will be taking on the challenge of the 21 mile crossing on his own later in September.
DCLT provided the pair with free six month gym and swim passes to support their training.
Leon said: “Swimming the English Channel is an ambition we’ve both had for many years.
“We know it’s not going to be easy but with the right training schedule behind us we’re confident we can complete the swim and DCLT’s generous donation of gym and swimming passes has certainly helped us prepare ourselves.”
According to the Channel Swimming Association (CSA), those embarking on the challenge will likely face cold water temperatures, chill factor from the sea air, and choppy waters for between eight to 16 hours, depending on the speed they swim at.
Jon Whiteley, head of community development at DCLT, said: “Leon and Alistair are both very competent swimmers who do a brilliant job running our open water swimming classes here in Doncaster and helping others to build up their confidence.
“We wanted to give something back to them both and help them prepare as much as possible for their Channel swims.
“We wish them the best of luck and we’ll be willing Alistair on later this month when the time comes to cross the Channel.”
Leon’s swim proudly raised money for Ovarian Cancer Charity and Alistair’s swim on the 19th September will be raising money for Swim for safe water.
