Solar panels have recently been installed on 684 houses across the borough. The work was carried out by local companies. Eleven council buildings have also had solar panels installed, including Cusworth Hall, the new Waste Transfer Station and the Civic Office.

For both schemes the council will generate income from the governments Feed in Tariff and make savings worth £7.2m over 20 years.

Plans to extend the scheme to hundreds more homes across the borough had to be scaled back in response to the Department of Energy and Climate Change’s proposal to cut the Feed in Tariff by 87 per cent, from 1 January 2016.

Mayor Ros Jones said: “I promised to take action to help reduce fuel poverty and these new solar panels will see hundreds of families benefit.

“Right across the borough we are looking for ways to help people make savings on their bills, and this initiative builds on my Big Power Switch, our collective energy buying scheme which has so far saved 1,360 households £317,000.”

The previous round of the Mayor’s Big Power Switch closed last week but opens again in May.
