The Bed Shop was the brainchild of Alan Franks in 1975 when he was working in the car industry but saw a gap in the market for good quality beds.

The company first launched in Warren Road, Scunthorpe, with just a small selection of products on display and employing only two members of staff.

The firm moved into Scunthorpe High Street in the early 1980s and opened a showroom of more than 2, 500 sq ft over two floors.

Business boomed and they introduced top name brands such as Silentnight and Millbrook and so Alan decided to expand the firm.

The Bed Shop opened outlets soon after in Hall Gate, Doncaster, in the early 1980s and now has five stores across the region.

To mark 40 years in business, the Doncaster outlet is marking the occasion this month.

Keith Winter, Doncaster branch manager, said: “We are always busy at the start of the year with January sales so we thought we would wait a little while before celebrating.

“We are proud to have been in business for more than 40 years now. To celebrate we are giving prizes out to the person who can show us the oldest receipt and are having special offers. We have always been based in the same premises, we are a landmark, and I want to say thank you to all of our customers.

“The Bed Shop is going from strength to strength, staff have reported an upturn in business and a continued positive response from customers.”
