Van drivers are being urged to remove any valuable items overnight following a spate of thefts in the last three months.

Since January, there have been 46 incidents reported to police where items have been stolen from Ford Transit Vans.

The areas where the thefts have occurred include Mexborough, Sprotbrough, Bentley, Wheatley Hills, Thorne, Intake, Stainforth, Moorends, Barnby Dun, Wheatley Park and the Doncaster Town Centre.

Detective Chief inspector Craig Jackson said: “Since the beginning of the year, there has been an unusual increase in the theft of items from this type of vehicle.

“There isn’t a particular area that has been targeted and I would strongly encourage anyone who either owns, or uses a Ford Transit van, to please remove any valuable items from their vehicles when left unattended.

“Whenever a vehicle is left unattended, please ensure there are no items left on display and that the vehicle is locked with the windows closed and is left secure.

“We have extra police patrols in the areas affected and also across the town and I would ask anyone with any information to please contact police on 101.”

A variety of power tools have been stolen from the vehicles and anyone who is offered this type of item for sale is encouraged to call police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
