Police are aiming to put the brakes on car thieves with the introduction of a new device.
Like a stinger, the device is thrown in front of a vehicle and uses spikes to penetrate the tyres. However, the force said StopSticks were easier and safer to deploy meaning all front-line officers could use them.
Every marked operational vehicle has been installed with the device, which deflates a car’s tyres in 30 seconds.
Insp Craig Clifton said: “Because StopStick is safe to handle it allows us to train a lot more people rather than just a select few. The new devices allow us to prevent more pursuits before they develop.”
