Police hunting a serial sex attacker have arrested a man in Sheffield.

After an appeal for information in The Star, police arrested a suspect in connection with eight alleged indecent assaults on schoolgirls in the Doncaster area.

A 43-year-old man from Pitsmoor, Sheffield, has been arrested and questioned about the incidents.

Police today thanked the public for their help in the investigation, which began in April.

More incidents were reported in May, June, July and early August.

Most of the alleged offences happened in Doncaster town centre, Balby, Lakeside and Intake.

Last Thursday police issued fresh CCTV images of a suspect they wanted to speak to and the next day arrested a man, who has since been bailed pending further enquiries.

The latest incident, which happened at around 5pm on August 5, involved an 11-year-old girl who was walking her dog on Thorne Road when a man pinched her bottom.

A previous incident on July 8 took place in an alleyway between Silver Street and Frances Street in the town centre when a man touched a 15-year-old girl’s chest.

Previous incidents took place on June 17 in Lothian Road, Intake, when a 14-year-old was given a bear hug; June 12 in Ashfield Court, Balby, when a man tried to hug and kiss an 11-year-old; June 3 when a 13-year-old had her chest touched on Gliwice Way, Lakeside; May 16 when a 12-year-old girl had her chest touched in Clayfields, Balby; and April 15 when a man touched a 14-year-old girl’s chest in Cromer Road.

Police patrols were stepped up as a result of the growing number of offences.

The new CCTV images showed a man walking with a unique gait and wearing a distinctive T-shirt featuring an image of a guitarist on it.

Superintendent Peter Norman, partnerships and neighbourhoods commander for Doncaster, said he wanted to thank the public for their assistance.
