A man has admitted starting a series of fires which caused a wave of destruction in a Dearne town.

Brett Dungworth, 22, of Bushfield Road, Wath-upon-Dearne, admitted nine charges of arson with intent to endanger life.

In just one night, the arson spree saw Dungworth set fire to a number of wheelie bins next to vehicles and houses.

The offences took place in the Winfield Road, Stump Cross Road and Saville Road areas of the town.

Police said nobody was injured during the incidents.

However extensive damage was caused to various properties in the early hours of Friday, June 28.

Officers originally issued a number of appeals for witnesses to the incidents.

Dungworth previously appeared at Rotherham Magistrates Court and was brought before Sheffield Crown Court last week where he pleaded guilty to the charges.

A spokeswoman for the Crown Prosecution Service said: “I can confirm that the defendant has pleaded guilty to nine counts of arson.”

He is due to be sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court on February 3 2014.
