Help garden birds survive the winter

As the wintry weather starts to come in, don’t forget to feed your garden birds!

That’s the message from the RSPB who hold their Feed the Birds Day on October 29.

They say it’s time to polish your feeders and start thinking about the ultimate dinner guests; your feathered friends in the garden.

“As the clocks go back and winter arrives, the extra food, water and shelter we provide for birds and other creatures could be the difference between life and death for many species”, said a spokesman.

“Birds appreciate our help with supplementary food all year round but there is no time like the Autumn to step up your feeding and the RSPB is asking everyone in South Yorkshire to keep feeders and bird tables topped up”.

If you can afford bird food such as mixed seed, nyjer seed and peanuts then that’s great, but scraps like leftover rice and pasta, cereals (minus the milk) and unsalted bacon rind will do the job just as well.

And a supply of fresh water is essential.
