A pensioner had money snatched from her purse by a cruel distraction burglar.

South Yorkshire Police are now appealing for help in tracking down the thief who stole the money from the woman’s home in broad daylight.

At around 1.45pm on Saturday, October 19, a man knocked at the door of an address in Doncaster Road, Hatfield, and claimed to be selling cleaning products to the woman who answered the door.

When the elderly woman, aged 80, went back into her house to get some money, the man followed her in uninvited.

He then asked for a drink and to use the bathroom, at which point the woman noticed her purse was missing and challenged him.

The suspect then ran out of the woman’s front door and along Coppice Lane, towards Dunscroft.

The pensioner later discovered her purse, in the toilet, but cash stored inside was missing.

Officers have now issued a description of the man in a bid to track down the culprit.

He is described as white, aged around 30 years old and 6ft tall. He was “very thin”, with short brown hair and of a smart appearance.

He was wearing dark clothing and carrying a large black holdall containing various cleaning and household products.

South Yorkshire Police are appealing for information on the incident, and want to hear from anyone who may have had a man fitting this description calling at their house to sell cleaning products.

Anyone with information should call the police non-emergency number on 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
