A police crackdown on car crime in Mexborough has resulted in a dramatic reduction in the number of incidents.
Thieves stole items from 19 vehicles and also nicked one car in the Adwick Road area of the town in November.
But following police action there was a reduction in January, with 11 thefts from vehicles and two stolen cars.
Mexborough Safer Neighbourhood Team appealed for residents to make sure their cars were made secure after officers noticed 60 unlocked doors in just three nights in the town.
PC Phil Black said he was pleased to see the public had listened to the team’s advice.
He said: “Operations are still ongoing with cars being checked on a regular basis and this has become part of our regular patrols.
“For a long time now we have checked cars to see if any valuables have been left on display and have notified the owners if items are seen.
“I am aware that we are finding less and less so people seem to be taking notice.”
He added residents should always ensure vehicles are secure and valuables are kept out of sight.
The officer said: “Always lock your doors and double check they are locked before walking away. If possible park in a busy or well lit area. The more people that are around the less likely someone will have the time to break in.”
