A MAN has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after an alleged stabbing in Mexborough this morning.

Police said a 49-year-old man received a stab wound during a dispute with a group of men on Spencer Street at 7.40am.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance in a serious condition.

Police have cordoned off the street while investigations take place.

The road is expected to remain closed for the next few hours.

Police have not made any arrests at this stage.

Residents who live close to the scene told of their shock.

One neighbour said: “There were several police cars and about three paramedic cars at the scene. Everyone was wondering what had happened. All we have heard is that someone was stabbed.”

Another man said: “Generally we don’t get the police here that often so it was quite shocking to see that many emergency vehicles outside one place. It must have been something serious.”

A police spokeswoman said: “Officers investigating the incident are appealing to anyone who was in area this morning, who believes they may have witnessed the incident, to contact South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 175 of the 23 November 2012 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
