Elderly residents are being urged to remain vigilant after a bogus caller swindled an old woman out of her bingo winnings.

A man called at the 84-year-old’s home on Goldthorpe Road in Goldthorpe claiming to be from the gas board and that he needed to turn off the boiler due to works taking place in the town.

A police spokeswoman said: “The man, who was holding several sheets of different coloured paper, asked for a cup of tea. The woman went into the kitchen, but the man then appeared at the doorway and said he’d left something in another house and would be back soon.

“Around 20 minutes later the woman noticed a clear, money bag containing her £62 bingo winnings and a blue case with her glasses inside had been taken.”

Police believe the man called at three other houses before he reached his victim, who was left shaken by the incident at 2.20pm on Wednesday, April 23.

He is described as a white male, 5ft 4in tall, around 28 years old, slim with dark, curly hair and a local accent. He was wearing dark clothing and a sleeveless, green, high-visibility jacket.

Anyone with information should contact police on 101.
