Doncaster residents are being invited to take part in a day of celebrations on Saturday for national Armed Forces Day.

Fun for all the family will be on offer in the town centre including parades, face painting and musical performances.

The national event is aimed at raising the profile of the Armed Forces and Doncaster’s free programme of celebrations are set to kick off at 9.30am and continue until 3pm.

Peter Davies, mayor of Doncaster, said: “Armed Forces Day is an opportunity for the people of Doncaster to pay tribute to the borough’s servicemen and women. We are honoured that many of them will join us on the day.

“We must never underestimate their bravery and their selfless actions and I hope that members of the public will show their support and attend the event.”

The civic mayor, Coun Eva Hughes, added: “The annual event raises the profile of the remarkable contribution the Armed Forces community makes to this country.

“Doncaster residents are invited to join us for a full day of events and activities, beginning with parades through the town and followed by displays, exhibitions and activities. It will be a memorable day for all the family.”

The programme of free celebrations includes a service at the minster; a Veterans’ Reminiscence Project at the Mansion House and musical performances throughout the town centre.

The Military Covenant will also be signed after Doncaster Council pledged to do more to support ex-servicemen and women who live in the town.
