Chance for Yorkshire youngsters to take the lead n world premiere of new musical theatre

Emmy award-winning composer and ex-member of band The Waterboys, Martyn Swain is looking for 20 young people and 10 adults to join the professional cast of a brand new ‘Musical Fairytale’ called RUBY, which will make it’s World debut at the Leeds City Varieties Theatre from 11 - 15 September 2012.

RUBY was written and composed by Martyn, who is also the founder of new Yorkshire-based production company, The Magical Opera Company. Successful auditionees will have the chance to make up part of the show’s ‘Kids’ Chorus’ and inhabit the magical ‘Cloudworld’ with one lucky hopeful also getting the chance to play the lead role of Ruby herself.

RUBY, based on a little known Grimms’ Fairy Tale called ‘Fairy Tell True,’ takes our heroine on a whirlwind adventure through dark forests and a magical world in the clouds, before, in a spellbindingly tense climax she learns a simple truth – ‘Tell the truth and you will be forgiven’.

RUBY represents an immediately accessible and breathtaking introduction to Musical Theatre, and is guaranteed to be great entertainment for the whole family. The show also includes music and libretto by Martyn Swain and orchestrations by Matt Dunkley, who has made significant arranging and conducting ontributions to Pirates of the Caribbean, Batman: The Dark Knight and Moulin Rouge.

Auditions for young people (aged 10 – 18) will be held at The City Varieties in three slots: Friday 8 June at 10am, Friday 8 June at 2.30pm and Saturday 9 June at 10am. Auditions for adults (aged 18+) will be held on Saturday 9 June at 2.30pm. Both adults and young people need to able to sing, dance and act, although no previous experience is necessary. Performers must be enthusiastic and able to commit to weekly rehearsals and the dates of the performances.
