Challenge Cup: Doncaster RLFC won't take Myton lightly - Russ Spiers

Having got their league campaign off to a winning start, the Dons turn their attention to the cup this weekend in a repeat of last season’s third round tie against the Hull-based National Conference League Premier Division outfit.

“It’s a game we are obviously expected to win,” said Spiers.

“But Myton showed last season that they’ve got some good young players and play an expansive game so we’ll be treating them with respect.

“Obviously the league is our priority but it would still be nice to have a bit of a cup run as well - particularly for the supporters.

“They really got behind us on Sunday and as a player that is what you want in every game, home and away.”

Spiers helped himself to a brace of tries in the 70-10 win over Coventry Bears.

“It was a good way to start the season both for me personally and the team,” said the 26-year-old forward.

“I thought the fact that we had had two pre-season friendlies against stong Championship opposition stood us in good stead.

“Obviously there are a lot of things we need to improve on going forward, as is always the case this time of the year, but I think we’ve got the squad to do well this season.

“It’s a younger side than last season, particularly in the forwards, but I feel we’ve got a good mixture of youth and experience.”

Spiers, who spent a season at York City Knights before returning to the Keepmoat last season, was a member of the Doncaster side which finished in the top four of the Championship in 2014 and remains keen to return to the second tier of the domestic game.

“We’ve been in League One for the last two seasons and hopefully we can win promotion back to the Championship this season.

“That’s certainly the aim.

“As in previous seasons, there are some strong teams in this division with the likes of relegated Bradford Bulls and Oldham and the Division One teams who just missed out last season such as York, Whitehaven, Workington Town, Newcastle and Keighley.

“But if we can play like we feel we can do there is no reason why we can’t make the play-offs.”
