THE devastated family of canal death eight-year-old Matthew Cartwright today described him as a ‘beautiful, loving little boy’.

He died after falling into the Swinton canal earlier this week.

His family have now released this photo and a statement saying: “We are devastated at the death of Matthew, which was a tragic accident. He was a beautiful, loving little boy and we miss him terribly.”

Emergency services were called to the canal off Talbot Street, between Rotherham and Doncaster, at around 5.10pm on Monday, August 29.

Matthew, of Windmill Terrace, Mexborough, was flown to Rotherham District General Hospital by the South Yorkshire Police helicopte.

He was later transferred to Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where he died with his family by his side, on Tuesday.

A post mortem will be carried out to establish the exact cause of death but police do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances.
