Call for action on congestion on Doncaster's roads

Minsters say they have completed a feasibility study on proposals which could slash congestion on roads in Doncaster.

Transport minister John Hayes has confirmed to Don Valley MP Caroline Flint that schemes were now being looked at that could see improvements carried out to the A1 through the borough.

Ms Flint said: “Large sections of the A1 through Yorkshire were widened and improved, largely under the Labour government.

“Given the severe congestion between the M18 and Warmsworth in particular, I am very keen that the Minister publishes the options for improvement and begins to consult as soon as possible.

“Congestion costs local businesses and affects the quality of life for commuters. Roads can take a long time to be delivered, so I don’t want any unnecessary delays.”

The MP has pledged to track progress on this and keep Ministers aware of problems on the A1 through Doncaster.

She asked Mr Hayes what steps his department plans to take to tackle traffic congestion on the A1 between J35 and the M6 J33.

A road investment strategy published in December 2014, contained proposals to upgrade the last non-motorway section of the A1 in Yorkshire, between Redhouse and Darrington, to motorway standard, together with supporting improvements to the A1(M) Doncaster Bypass, to create a new strategic route to the North East.

Mr Hayes said the feasibility study for the A1 between Redhouse and Darrington had been concluded and the outcomes are being considered by Government. The feasibility study identified a number of potential high level options for the stretch of road.

He said that these options would be developed further, alongside public and key stakeholder engagement and consultation, for consideration in the road investment period which will run from 2021 to 2025.
