The new year is a good time for job hunting

The first month of the new year is a good time to start job hunting, according to employment experts.

Most companies wait until after the Christmas and New Year break to begin their search for new staff, says the Department of Work and Pensions.

Laren Kilbey from Jobcentre Plus claimed that, despite the economic climate, there are jobs to be had: “We know that Jobcentre Plus receives only a small proportion of the jobs that are available so there are plenty of opportunities out there.”

Nationally, there are 380,000 jobs advertised on Jobcentre Plus, with the most vacancies in sales where there are 41,389 advertised posts. In the care sector there are 24, 553 jobs advertised, 17,624 vacancies for HGV drivers and 7,044 jobs in call centres on the books.

Employment minister Chris Grayling said: “There are jobs out there and we are bringing in far betetr help and support to get people into those opportunities. The new Work Programme will give those that need it the right help at the right time to make the leap back into the world of work.”
