A supermarket giant will create 100 more jobs in addition to the 400 already announced at a new distribution centre in Goldthorpe.
The doors have been opened to the Aldi distribution centre in Commercial Road as the initial phase of employees begin work.
The company originally announced 400 full and part-time positions would be created by the development but has since announced the development will create a total of 500 jobs.
In addition, Barnsley Council has granted a planning application for Aldi to build a new supermarket, creating 48 jobs, along with 28 new homes on land at Barnsley Road, Highgate.
The distribution centre is due to fully open in March, with the supermarket due later in the year.
Recruitment firm Baxter Personnel, which has been helping the firm to find applicants, said more than 7000 people had applied to work at the warehouse since July last year.
Sarah Leisner, the firm’s Barnsley-based consultant, said “The recruitment process so far has been really positive for everyone involved. We have enjoyed working with Aldi on this project and we have had some great feedback, even from applicants who haven’t been successful.”
“There has been a lot of anticipation for these jobs from the local people and everyone in the area is really excited about the development. We have had an overwhelming response to the job vacancies with applications still flowing in.”
One successful applicant, Lisa Marsh, said: “I’m really looking forward to starting at Aldi, it’s going to be great. I was so excited I couldn’t contain myself when I got the phone call inviting me for the first interview as I knew so many people had applied.”
An Aldi spokesman said: “Our Goldthorpe hub is a crucial part of Aldi’s on-going expansion, which will allow us to handle a greater number of stores.”
