Proposals for a second enterprise zone in Doncaster have been handed in to Government ministers.
Doncaster Council and the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership have submitted a bid to Government for a new Enterprise Zone to stimulate further economic growth in Doncaster.
The submission is part of a national competition which would, if successful, lead to the creation of a 20-acre enterprise zone at Carcroft Common, Bentley Moor Lane.
The new enterprise zone would enable businesses and developers to benefit from business rates relief starting in April 2017.
Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones said: “Jobs and growth are a top priority and this bid for a second enterprise zone in the borough would be the catalyst for new developments and business in the north of Doncaster.
“The financial incentives offered by this new enterprise zone would stimulate significant private sector development at Carcroft Common and transform the site into an attractive business location.
“Applying for enterprise zone status demonstrates our ambitions and commitment to supporting local communities across the borough by creating the right conditions to attract new business, economic growth and job creation.
“We are doing everything we can to drive forward investment and create new jobs for local people.”
Earlier this month, Doncaster Council’s cabinet backed plans to support a new development at Doncaster’s other enterprise zone at Robin Hood Airport Business Park.
The Government is expected to make their decision on the new enterprise zones in November as part of the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement.
If the Carcroft Common scheme gets the go-ahead it would mean there was an enterprise zone in both the north and the south of the borough.
Businesses based on enterprise zones can access a number of benefits.
They include up to 100 per cent business rate discounts worth up to £275,000 per business over five years, and simplified local authority planning, such as orders that grant automatic planning permission for certain developments such as new industrial buildings, and other tax allowances.
They were first established three years ago and have attracted 19,000 jobs nationally.
