New lease of life for Doncaster shop

Plans to take over an iconic Doncaster building, which has been vacant for more than five years, have been given the go-ahead.

The former Miller Brothers showroom on the Shaw Lane Industrial Estate in Wheatley, which has been empty since the business closed in 2009, is set to be taken over by family firm The Furniture Barn, resulting in the creation of around 20 new jobs.

The planning application, which requested permission to change the use of parts of the ground and first floor, install mezzanine floors and make external alterations to the building, has been accepted by Doncaster Council.

After being empty for more than five years, the building, which has fallen into disrepair since Miller Brothers vacated the premises, has been seen by many in the community as an ‘eyesore’.

Sandra Crabtree, of the Friends of Sandall Park, which is located near the site, said she welcomed the news.

She said: “It’s been a blot on the landscape for a long time so it’s good to hear something will finally be done with the building which is a bit of an eyesore.

“The fact that a business wants to take it over is fantastic news, and will hopefully bring some much-needed jobs to the area.”

Specialising in ‘bulky’ furniture items such as wardrobes, tables and chest of drawers, The Furniture Barn was founded in Leicestershire.

The new Doncaster store will be the firm’s fifth branch.

The Furniture Barn declined to comment on the Doncaster development, but a spokesperson confirmed the store is due to open in August this year.

Planned changes to the building will include a new glazed customer entrance.
