Engineering students from Doncaster College paid a visit to Tata Steel, one of the world’s largest steel companies, to watch the alloy metal being made.

Students on the Level 2 in Engineering course travelled to Sheffield to witness steel being produced from raw materials right through to the production of high grade steel that is used in Formula 1 motor racing and other high-end engineering products, including the space programme.

Colin Eglan, the lecturer who accompanied them on the visit, said: “Students were impressed with the sight and sounds within the steelworks as it was the first time many of them had encountered

heavy engineering at its best. Students were enthused with what they saw with many using the first opportunity to put applications in to try and achieve an apprenticeship for next year.”
