Staff at Doncaster’s Amazon distribution centre marked the company’s 20th birthday by joining in a global event that resulted in record-breaking sales numbers.
The team at the town’s fulfilment centre at the Firstpoint distribution centre got into the party spirit last week to celebrate the milestone, which included the presentation of a special birthday cake and a history of Amazon quiz.
The celebrations were held on Prime Day (July 15) in which users of Amazon Prime - which allows customers to view TV shows and movies online - were invited to make the most of exclusive deals and offers.
The event set a new global record for Amazon after the firm announced it sold more units on Prime Day than on the biggest Black Friday ever and had more new members try Prime worldwide than any single day in Amazon’s history.
Customers ordered 34.4 million items across Prime-eligible countries, breaking all Black Friday records with 398 items ordered per second.
In addition, the company said members globally saved millions of pounds on deals.
The Doncaster-based centre shipped products purchased by customers during Prime Day to the UK, Europe and around the world.
Paul Thorpe, general manager at the site, said: “Prime Day in Doncaster was a fantastic success and myself and the team here are delighted to have played a part in helping break a global sales record.
“With the event coinciding with Amazon’s 20th birthday, we decided to have a party for all of the associates on Prime Day. Cakes for everyone and a special Amazon-themed quiz were some of the activities that we got involved in during the day and it was great to see everyone in Doncaster have a great time on such a momentous day for Amazon.”
