This week has seen the launch of a fantastic new social business initiative ‘Made By U’.
A carpet re-use and recycling operation that is set to transform homelessness across the Doncaster Borough.
Every year 400,000 tonnes of discarded carpets are sent to landfill at huge costs to local authorities and businesses. DMBC and all local authorities are under increasing financial pressures to make savings on the cost of services as budgets become tighter.
‘Made By U’ will see 100 per cent of its profits being reinvested into local communities in support of DMBC, ensuring the continuing high quality delivery of services to those affected by or at risk of homelessness.
‘Made By U’ is a social business born from a partnership between The M25 Housing & Support Group, Doncaster’s local homelessness charity of over 20 years and Neil Greens, Carpets and Flooring of Edenthorpe. These two well established local providers have joined forces in creating ‘Made By U’ to ensure that the delivery of homelessness services can become more sustainable in the future.
Joyce Foster, Executive Director of The M25 Housing & Support Group said “This exciting opportunity has arrived at exactly the right moment for M25 and those people we support – last year M25 supported over 1800 people affected by
Homelessness – we also supported 169 of those back into work – ‘Made By U’ will help us do so much more to benefit Doncaster’s economic regeneration and create a better future for improving Homelessness services across the borough”
Neil Green – ‘Made By U’ Project Director said “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me, having developed the project with M25 and forged relation’s with environmentally conscious partners around the country to 100 per cent avoid landfill and I cannot wait to see the scale of success unfold. I have run my carpet business for over 15 years and ‘Made By U’ is a demonstration of my commitment towards ending homelessness in my local town.
‘Made By U’ has three key aims: To re-use carpets where possible to provide affordable carpeting to all those in social housing to recycle carpets that cannot be re-used in the manufacture of high quality underlay to produce Eco fuel pellets out of carpets that cannot be recycled or reused ‘Made By U‘ will offer employment and training for up to 100 M25 service users exclusively each year.
Training will be delivered through the ‘Made By U’ Academy providing real employment opportunities as drivers, cleaning technicians, carpet fitters, underlay manufacturing for those affected by homelessness.
