Boy who died after canal fall is named.

The little boy who died after he fell into a Doncaster area canal has been named.

Eight-year-old Matthew Cartwright of Windhill Terrace in Mexborough died after he fell into the South Yorkshire Navigation Vanal near Talbot Road in Mexborough.

He was pulled out of the water by emergency services on Monday around 5pm and was flown to Rotherham District Hospital by the police helicopter.

He was transferred to Sheffield Children’s Hospital where he died on Tuesday night with his family by his side.

Police say that Matthew was with a family member at the time of the incident.

There are no suspicious circumstances and police say the incident was a tragic accident.

Matthew’s parents are too upset to talk about the incident.
