Alarm system gets its 1000th Doncaster user

An alarm system to help elderly Doncaster people live more independently in their own homes has just signed up its 1000th customer.

The Telecare service uses sensors in the home to detect a problem and raise an alert at Doncaster Council’s Home Alarm service via a phone line.

This unique technology can detect such events as falls, as well as environmental changes in the home such as floods, fire and gas leaks.

The alerts are assessed by professional and experienced call operators to establish the nature of the emergency and the appropriate response needed.

This may be simply supporting the person over the phone, contacting a family member, friend or carer or arranging for the council’s Home Emergency Alarm Response Team to visit them.

If needed the emergency services would be contacted. The service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Councillor Pat Knight, cabinet member for health and adult social care, said: “Telecare has been making a real difference to a growing number of people, transforming the lives of people who wish to remain living independently.”

Doncaster Council has also created a new Telecare demonstration room, to allow people to develop an understanding and familiarity with the equipment.

Based at St James Court, it allows the range of equipment available to be viewed working, within a homely environment.

The room will also be used for staff training and demonstrations.

Requests for the service can be made by people themselves, their relatives or advocates, staff from health, social care, housing or voluntary agencies, simply by calling Doncaster Council’s Adult Contact Team who will discuss specific needs and make arrangements for an assessment.
