A campaign to get more dog owners to clean up after their pets is coming to Doncaster, it has been announced.

Keep Britain Tidy and the Dogs Trust have teamed up for a drive to remind every dog owner that, when it comes to dog mess, they need to bag it and bin it.

The campaign will culminate in ‘The Big Scoop’ this Friday, which will be supported by Doncaster Council with a series of events across the borough, where area teams will be chatting to dog owners and giving away dog poop bags.

Coun Christine Mills, cabinet member for environment and waste, said: “Although the vast majority of dog owners are responsible and do pick up after their pets, a small minority unfortunately refuse to do the right thing.

“Doncaster Council is backing The Big Scoop in the hope of encouraging dog owners to pick up after their pets every time they answer a call of nature and to ensure they also bin the bagged waste afterwards.”

Council officers have the powers to issue an on-the-spot fixed penalty notice to anyone caught failing to clean up after their dog, including anyone who bags but does not bin dog mess.

Complaints over pet owners failing to clear up after their dogs have been raised in various areas of the borough.

Warmsworth Parish Council has raised concerns with the authorities over the problem through neighbourhood watch meetings.

Concerns have also been raised about the issue being a problem in Adwick Park, where council patrols have been carried out. Problems have been flagged up in the Bentley and Hexthorpe areas at public meetings.

Residents can let the council know about dog fouling in their community by completing an online report at or by calling 01302 736000.

Anyone with a smartphone can also report issues through the free My Doncaster app which can be downloaded from iTunes or the Android Market.
