A trek through Welton by Doncaster Ramblers

This week's walk is a Doncaster Ramblers trek around the area of Welton.

Thirty-five of us gathered on the green in Welton (after a short, 40 minute drive from Doncaster) for this very interesting figure of eight walk.

What a delight it was not coming across any significant mud for a whole day! We were promptly on our way following The Yorkshire Wolds Way south through Melton towards the banks of the River Humber, although there was a short detour, as it was high tide and safe passage could not be guaranteed.

With the Humber Bridge behind us we enjoyed the open vistas across the river before heading inland again, skirting the edge of Brough and back to our start point. Refreshments were enjoyed at the famous Green Dragon Inn (where legend has it the highwayman Dick Turpin was arrested) which was most welcoming and cosy, as it had just started to drizzle. There was even a “Muddy Boots Welcome” sign outside which always bodes well on a walk. Having completed 7.5 miles in the morning, the afternoon was a shorter 4 mile stretch up through the delightful Welton Dale, (passing the hidden Raikes Mausoleum, built for Robert Raikes) returning back through the equally pretty Elloughton Dale. There was light rain all afternoon but this did not detract from a great day out in this lovely corner of The Wolds. Thanks. Phil, for thorough planning and considerate leading and Pete for backmarking.

And now for the route.

With the church on your right head in an easterly direction, taking the right hand fork on the metalised track, then turn right on the “Beverley 20 / Yorkshire Wolds Way” heading east then south, until reaching the A63 interchange, (high tide and localised flooding meant we could not take the YW Way south to the Humber estuary ). Here there is a roundabout to negotiate, a flyover to cross and a subway pass through, then head west on an industrial estate type road towards a roundabout. Continue strait (second exit) towards another roundabout, take the first exit (turn left) and head south crossing the railway line at Melton Crossing, then shortly after turn right through industrial estate. The path then turns left heading south towards the Humber. Turn right back on the Beverley 20 / Yorkshire Wolds Way. At the next junction of paths, turn right and head north on the Beverley 20 onto Common Lane making again for the railway crossing and onwards to the A63, passing residential housing on the left and industrial units on the right. Once over the A63 you are back in Welton.

Part two of this walk, passing the church on the right but this time take the left fork and head north east on the Yorkshire Wolds Way, through Welton Dale, passing the Mausoleum on the left (hidden in woods). On reaching a T junction of paths turn left, and at the road left again. Just at the end of the riding centre, turn right onto the High Hunsley Circuit, until reaching Elloughton Dale and take the footpath left, south west towards Elloughton. On reaching the road turn left and head back (on the Beverley 20) to Welton.
