A rising star of the British opera scene will be back on home soil when she hosts a fundraising gala concert this weekend.
Mezzo soprano Kamilla Dunstan, who hopes to make it big in the world of opera, will take a break from her studies at Glasgow’s Royal Conservatoire of Scotland to host this Saturday’s ‘Work In Progress’ concert, a stone’s throw from her home village.
Kamilla, aged 25, who has already studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and performed with the English Chamber Orchestra at St Paul’s Catherdral, will be joined by fellow musical students for the show at St Mary and St Martin’s Church, Blyth, which includes music by Mozart, Bach, Brahms and more as well as a selection of songs from musical theatre.
Kamilla said: “I have always loved singing and I am getting paid to do something I enjoy doing.
“It is a very long haul with a lot of hard work but I want to go as far as I can in music and I want people to support me and help me get there.”
Kamilla has recently performed as a soloist with the Glasgow City Chorus and worked with director Martin Lloyd-Evans and director of the Royal Opera House Young Artist Programme David Gowland as part of the British Youth Opera Spring Workshops.
She has also understudied Annio, in the Alexander Gibson Opera School’s production of La Clemenza di Tito by Mozart.
Other roles in opera scenes include Cenerentola in Rossini’s La Cenerentola, Hedwig in Rossini’s William Tell, and Occtavia in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea.
She will be making her London opera debut with the British Youth Opera, as she is understudying Ninetta in The Little Green Swalllow.
She will be performing the role at the London Peacock Theatre on September 12.
Kamilla added: “All the travelling to and from Scotland can be hard work and take a lot out of me, but I love singing and I love passing on my knowledge so I am really looking forward to the concert.”
The show starts at 7.30pm and tickets, priced £10, which include a glass of wine and canapes during the interval, are available on the door on the night.
