Pub of the week

WHAT’S is everyone’s idea of a real country pub?

It’s all a matter of personal taste of course but a starting point is the image you get when you first begin your drinking career.

So it was when I returned to one of my teenage haunts a couple of years ago after a long lapse and discovered it had hardly changed at all - so I began making up for lost time.

In fact the only thing that had changed were the customers!

The Shoulder of Mutton at Kirk Smeaton is a relatively short drive from Doncaster but it’s a world away in pub style. Almost unique in fact, attractive to look at, cosy with a low ceiling and traditional interior, the well stocked bar serves both rooms.

The large beer garden has a superb view over the Went Valley and a familiar face in charge too, with Chris, an aquaintance from a few years ago pulling pints and serving a choice of splendid sandwiches that won’t stretch your pocket.

Good ale is taken as standard with CAMRA awarding the pub awards on more than one occasion. Sit outside the door in a veritable sun trap and watch the traffic go by, two cars an hour, six if it’s busy - simply wonderful and what memories. Call in and enjoy a real country pub.
