Patients and visitors to the main hospital sites, which include Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw Hospital and Montagu Hospital in Mexborough will have to pay £1.50 to park for an hour. Parking for 1-2 hours will cost £2.80, 2-4 hours £4.10, 4-6 hours will cost £5.00 and to park for longer than 6 hours will cost £8.50.

The changes will come in effect on April 1. The cost will also increase for staff from March 1.

The changes to charges are being made in line with the best practice hospital parking guidance set out by the Department of Health and will see the first increases in car parking charges since 2006 at Montagu Hospital, 2009 at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and 2011 at Bassetlaw Hospital.

Dawn Jarvis, Director of Strategy and Improvement at DBH, said: “Many people don’t realise that hospital car park charges are collected by the Trust and do go back into patient care and maintenance of the car parks.

“We know that increases to car parking prices are unpopular, however we have been able to keep these at a static rate for a number of years, the increases we are having to make now are still in line with other local NHS trusts to ensure they are affordable to our patients.

“It’s no secret that the Trust is facing a challenging financial position and we are having to make some tough decisions. We hope that our visitors and staff will understand us taking these steps rather than other measures that more directly affect patient care.”

Patients and their main visitors who have to use the car parks frequently, such as long-term patients or those who visit frequently for treatment for long-term conditions will be unaffected by the changes as they will continue to be offered concessions.

The park and ride service for Doncaster Royal Infirmary will continue to be free to patients and staff.

It is anticipated that the changes to both staff and patient parking charges will generate approximately £800k additional income a year.
