Dr Nick Tupper, clinical director of 4Doncaster Primary Care Network, a group of GP practices looking after tens of thousands of patients, said while family doctors saw fewer patients during the first wave, the second saw them busy, and there were concerns over a feared third wave.
Dr Tupper was involved in rolling out the coronavirus vaccine for over 80s at a hub in the town, expecting 300 patients a day in the first three days, and praised practice manager Alison Moore for her work on the set-up.

He said: "Initially in the first wave we were quieter than normal, but the second wave has been really busy. We’ve been dealing with lots of patients who have been poorly post Covid, so with long Covid syndrome, but also all the other work that was not done during the first wave and we’re moving into our busiest time of the year – so it’s just been very busy in primary care, as it has in the hospital.
“Follow the rules, follow the guidance, and be cautious during the Christmas period.”
He said of the vaccine: “People’s lives have been affected by Covid for nearly a year now and this is our real fightback. The vaccinations are safe and effective and will be the path to getting back to normal life.

It’s been through all the proper procedures it hasn’t been rushed, and it has been tested appropriately. We’re very confident in it, so have it and be protected."
He said there had been a positive reaction when patients were contacted about vaccination.
He said: “It’s almost like they’ve got the golden ticket, so, people are very excited to have it and really wanting to have it, which is brilliant to hear.”
