Doncaster Chamber says help is needed to get older people who are out of work back into employment

The Workplace Training and Development Commission follows an 18 month study of what businesses want from adult skills training provision in the UK.

The report calls for a reform of the training system and hopes to fix skill shortages.

Doncaster Chamber CEO, Dan Fell, said: This is an important report on the UK’s skills system and I am delighted that Doncaster Chamber was able to play an influential role in creating it.

“The world has been turned on its head this last 12 months and it is more important than ever that we have a skills system that is nimble and responds to the needs of employers and 21st century learners alike.

“The report calls for independent advice to be more readily available for SMEs, to enable them to develop learning cultures within business, and for a continued push to achieve parity of esteem for technical and academic education.

“There has - quite rightly- been significant investment into support for young people through the economic crisis and back into work to avoid a lost generation and long term economic scarring; this must continue.

“However, it is important to recognise that many older workers have lost their jobs too and support is needed to help them transfer their skills into new employment.”

The report hopes to take short term economic issues and long standing social issues.
