War heroes in Goldthorpe, Thurnscoe and elsewhere in the Dearne will never be forgotten as they have helped the Barnsley War Memorials Project Roll of Honour top 8,000 names.

The Barnsley British Co-operative Roll of Honour includes names of men and women who served their country in his and her majesty’s forces between 1899 and 2010.

A spokesman for the project said: “The project aims to record for posterity the names of all the Barnsley area fallen from the Boer War and the First World war to the present day.”

They added: “This is to make those names available for everyone to search in a roll of honour online and on paper in the Barnsley archives.”

As part of this huge undertaking the first objective is to create a World War I Roll of Honour during the centenary years of 2014-2018.

Michael Dugher said: “The work of The Barnsley War Memorial Project is greatly appreciated. We must do all we can to make sure the sacrifice of those who have served their country is never forgotten.”
