A mecca in the making for Northern Soul has just opened in the centre of Doncaster with pub landlord Darren Courtney taking the reins of Bar Mojo.

Taking over at the new Northern Soul hot spot in Scot Lane, which used to be The Coach and Horses, is a first time venture for Darren even though he is steeped in the business as his father used to run a pub.

The 49-year-old will run the hostelry with his partner Bryony Westerman, who at 22, he describes as possibly the youngest landlady in Doncaster.

Bryony previously worked at the Hedley Verity Wetherspoons pub in Leeds for four years, so has plenty of experience behind the bar.

Darren said he was looking forward to changing the fortunes of the Mojo and making it a spot attracting older clientele.

He added: “This used to be a rave place for quite young people, but I want to attract Northern Soul lovers, who tend to be a little bit older. This will also be a live music venue which I hope will bring customers flooding in.”

The Bar Mojo landlord, who has been a DJ across the world for the past 30 years, also brings his own Soul and Motown to the pub and spins his own discs there.
